Metal scholars, the recent controversy (published by Loudwire) involving METALBIRB and Machine Gun Kelly (MGK) + Ronnie Radke from Falling in Reverse has sparked a debate on the boundaries of artistic expression.

METALBIRB criticized MGK's guitar design (a razorblade), expressing concerns about potential glorification of self-harm. In my opinion, there's an opportunity here to investigate this controversy by drawing parallels with Oscar Wilde's aesthetic philosophy as presented in "The Picture of Dorian Gray," where Wilde (read the preface in the link below) emphasized the separation of art from morality.

I think we have an opportunity here to discuss that for many subjects it won't be about being right or wrong; it'll be an opportunity to reflect and to decide to take certain paths and accept the consequences, just like in the book.

If you take the fully hedonistic approach, you do whatever the hell you want and you don't care about anybody else, that means you show no empathy for others. However, if you refrain from your creative outlet, you're also being controlled by whoever tells you do do x or y. It's a paradoxical situation since we constantly fight for individuality, while living in a society where the other also matters, the other has a voice. So what do we do? Should art have limits?

Wilde's philosophy posits that art is amoral, serving as a medium for creative expression.

METALBIRB's moral critique aligns with the judgmental Victorian society depicted in Wilde's novel. In response, MGK defended his artistic expression by emphasizing the aesthetic value of his work, echoing Wilde's rejection of moral judgments in favor of appreciating art from a purely aesthetic standpoint. But there's the danger here of behaving like Dorian Gray and giving in to total self-absorption. That's why it gets really complicated.

This analysis reveals the complexity of interpretations, emphasizing the subjective nature of artistic expression. The controversy underscores the enduring tension between artistic freedom and the societal consequences of creative expression, showcasing the multifaceted nature of interpretation in the realm of art and morality.
