For the first time in the history of Commemoration Day at Imperial College, a special dinner was held on the eve of Commemoration Day 2002 to honour graduands and Fellows of the College. The guest speaker was the Senior Minister of Singapore, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, who was one of four people receiving a Fellowship of Imperial College this year.

Over 600 guests attended the dinner, including alumni, staff and associates of the College, in the spectacular dinosaur hall of the Natural History Museum, where the 26m high skeleton of a diplodocus dominates. This provided a stunning backdrop to the evening's proceedings. With the lights dimmed and the back of the hall encased in a glimmering star curtain, the setting for dinner looked truly magical.
