Dredd's intro to the movie shows a bleak future existence for the United States. Apparently, the bulk of the country is an irradiated wasteland and completely uninhabitable. Presumably, because at some point nuclear bombs were detonated or we just messed up the planet so badly that most of the continental United States can't be lived in anymore. Out of these two scenarios, I would lean towards the latter. If another country was going to drop bombs on the United States they would most definitely hit Washington D.C. or New York, which is exactly where the only remaining city in Dredd, Mega City One, is located.

Dredd explains that there are 800 million people living in Mega City One, which seems like a really big number. The current population of the United States (2019) is only 327 million. However, it is entirely possible for that many people to live in a small area, look at countries such as India or China with very high population densities, notwithstanding I am sure that the extremely large living structures in Mega City One help with population density.

The Dredd pivots to the Hall of Justice, the futuristic police force that acts as judge, jury, and executioner. There are a few images of the chaos and violence that occurs in Mega City One, just the kind of images you would image occurring if 800 million people lived in one big urban center. During this entire scene, Dredd is getting on his body armor, powering up his gun, and getting ready to hit the streets for another day of crime-fighting. All in all, a great intro to the movie with a dreary outlook on the future of the United States.
