In loving memory of Rear Admiral William "Bill" E. Newman, a distinguished retired Navy officer and former Flight Leader of the renowned Blue Angels, who passed away on Monday, December 4, 2023. A true patriot and dedicated servant to his country, Boss Newman's remarkable career spanned 35 years as a commissioned officer, leaving an indelible mark on the aviation community.

RDML Newman’s journey began with his graduation from the Naval Academy in 1961, where he embarked on a path as an aircraft carrier-based naval aviator. His illustrious career included roles as an attack pilot, experimental test pilot, and the esteemed position of Flight Leader of the Navy's Blue Angels, a role he assumed during the 1978 and 1979 seasons. His leadership guided the team through over 200 air shows across the USA and Canada, showcasing the precision and skill for which the Blue Angels are renowned.

With 950 carrier landings and 5200 pilot hours in 53 types of U.S. and British military aircraft, Boss Newman’s expertise was unparalleled. In the face of adversity during combat operations in Vietnam, his A-4 "Skyhawk" was hit by enemy ground fire on multiple missions. Remarkably, Boss Newman was shot down and rescued on a Friday-the-13th, a testament to his courage and resilience.

Throughout his career, RDM Newman held significant sea commands, including Attack Squadron-195 flying the A-7 "Corsair II," Carrier Air Wing NINE onboard the aircraft carrier Constellation, and the USS White Plains, a 17,000-ton combat stores ship operating in the Pacific and Indian Oceans.

In his final decade of service, Boss Newman contributed significantly to the Naval Air Systems Command as a Materiel Professional. His responsibilities encompassed major acquisition program management, engineering oversight of naval aviation development programs, and the flag command of the Naval Air Warfare Centers' research and test activities on 53,000 square miles of test ranges in southern California.

Rear Admiral Bill Newman's legacy is one of unwavering dedication, exceptional leadership, and a profound impact on the world of naval aviation. This video honors his life, service, and the lasting impression he leaves on those who had the privilege of knowing him.
