Dr. Mark Beaird was on a busy shift when shortly after midnight, a nurse urgently called him into a patient's room. The patient had been admitted at term and was induced for hypertension in pregnancy. Everything was going well and the patient's doctor was at home. The patient's husband suddenly called the nurse and told her the patient was bleeding and had back pain.

Dr. Beaird called for an ultrasound while he gathered the patient's history. He ruled out placenta previa and suspected an abruption, a condition where the placenta prematurely separates from the uterus. Then the heart tracing changed from normal to showing decelerations. Dr. Beaird began making arrangements for an emergency C-section because of the patient's active hemorrhage and possible abruption.

Emergencies can happen at any hour. Our programs provide around-the-clock care from hospital-based OB/GYN physicians. These highly skilled clinicians do not replace the care patients receive from their regular OB/GYN physicians, instead, they serve as an extension of the patient’s regular doctor.
