How to deal with concrete on site? Why it's like gold for some people? What you need to know when working on site?
I will tell you about basic things you need to know from engineer’s perspective when working on site, especially if you will be dealing with ordering concrete. Often site engineer’s job is cubing the concrete up and senior engineer’s job is to deal with delivery - so timing and logistics in some sense – and trust me guys it’s quite stressful. I will tell you what your responsibilities might be and what you need to know about the concrete from a construction site point of view.
Concrete is like gold and it just means that concrete cost a lot of money and even if you think it’s not that much really the amounts of it being lost every single day stands for a huge amounts. On your site you don’t really want to be left with extra few meters of concrete and trust me this happens sometimes to the best 😊 As cubing concrete seems one of the easiest jobs on site the circumstances make it little bit hard. You can see few videos in which I am talking about concrete and how to cube it giving you tips and also showing how to use EDM for irregular shapes etc. I’ll focus more on dealing with concrete on site and the properties you have to know to not make a mistake.

First important thing is a price of concrete and it’s ar. 100- to even 140$ at the minute depending on concrete type and your deal with the supplier 😊
If you need less than 6m3 of concrete you will be charged a part load.
Timing is the key guys and it’s not easy to win all the time, but few things you need to know. Each of the companies I showed will charge you a waiting time in most cases above 30min – so you have 30 min max to discharge the load. Time is ticking and even if you have to pay it’s not the end of the world as the worst thing is the concrete can’t wait too long to be placed ar.2H – and this is a very important thing for us engineers. The property of concrete in this case is the slump – telling us about concrete consistency / concrete workability:
S2 range 50 – 90 target 70
S3 range 100-150 target 130
S4 range 160-210 target 180
Concrete should be slump tested before placing to confirm required consistency. Next thing , you need to make sure the right concrete mix goes to its destiny eg. C60 columns and C40 slab then sample will be taken and cubes not mixed – this is typically on your cube man on site, but it’s our job to fill the tickets for cube collections and keep an eye on all procedures etc and remember DON’T ADD WATER TO CONCRETE. This is changing water to cement ratio and make your concrete properties completely different to design.
