It started as an innocent a gravel ride. Then halfway through it started snowing but at the time I didn’t think anything of it... oops.

Sadie and I took her Surly Straggler and my Trek Checkpoint ALR 5 out for a wintertime gravel ride in the Pacific Northwest. We were hoping for a nice, easy 40 mile loop after last week's episode which saw us take almost 2 hours to ride 5 miles. At the beginning it was looking pretty good, nice hardpack, luxury gravel. But as we kept climbing higher and higher, snow began to fall heavier and heavier. Before long we found ourselves unable to ride our gravel bikes with 47c and 44c WTB Byway tires, respectively. We began pushing our bikes through what was now 6" deep snow with the hope we might make it back to rideable gravel to continue our loop. But alas, it was not meant to be. Sunset was quickly approaching and both of our shoes had soaked through. We made the tough decision to turn around and descend the 3,000 feet (914 meters) we had just climbed rather than take our chances with what might become even deeper snow. Because of the cold, neither one of us could feel our toes by the time we got back to the car so I'm confident we made the right decision.
