Taking the time to check your free credit report is an important part of securing yourself against identity theft. You need to make sure that the information on the report matches who you are and that there aren't any bank accounts, credit cards or loans being taken out in your name which aren't actually yours.

Thankfully, the law allows for you to receive one annual credit report for free from each credit bureau: Trans Union, Experian and Exquifax.

This means that you could check your credit once every four months, which is something that I recommend that you do.

And if you've already had your identity stolen in the past or feel like you're at a high risk for that to happen, it's a good idea to consider using a credit monitoring service that will let you know the moment any type of account is opened in your name.
