What comes first: installing new carpet or painting? Nick May of Walls by Design, a painting contractor in Denver, CO answers this question.

Today’s question has to do with timing and doing other projects. Today’s question is – if I’m putting down new carpet, should I get the house painted first and then put the carpet down or vice versa? I’m always going to say change your carpet out last, only because you never know. We are used to working around floor surfaces that need to be protected. From a day to day standpoint, our guys are typically used to doing that. But if you’re putting new carpets down, I’m always going to say go ahead and do that last. A lot of times things might need to be touched up, so we’re going to just come back and touch those areas up if the carpet guys scuff up a few things, so we just say we’ll come out and do that at no cost to you because it’s just safer. I’d hate to have a random spill on your brand new carpet and then we’re having to replace that. I can’t say I’ve ever had to do that. I can’t say we’ve ever had to replace carpet in the last 16 years anyways, but to play it safe I’m going to say let’s paint and then change out the carpet. Hope that’s helpful.
