Understanding the difference on what a power rake does vs a lawn aeration machine can be confusing. Simply put a power rake removes debris sitting ontop of the soil and can thin out the top layer of the thatch layer. The lawn aeration machine punches through the thatch layer and removes plugs from the soil that allow the soil to breath properly.

Lawn aeration should be performed 2 to 3 times per year in clay based soil and 1 time per year for sandy soil types.

In this video I used the ryan lawnair IV and a bluebird power rake. I also show my ams soil probe and thatch rake.
