When you crack open the multiverse, truly anything can happen. With the multiverses causing so much chaos, the possibilities of what could happen were endless - so the plot of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness changed QUITE a bit. We got a whole lot of characters that we didn’t expect - especially different versions of characters we know joining from other multiverses - but we didn’t get all those that had been planned initially. Rachel McAdams only plays two versions of Christine Palmer - any guesses how many more were planned?
Since the production was delayed for various reasons - the pandemic of course, as well as director Scott Derrickson stepping down because of creative differences - and then, the whole MCU Phase 4 got shifted. The Multiverse of Madness film was meant to come before Spider: No Way Home, but re-arranging these two meant some major plot changes, especially because of all the chaos Doctor Strange began in Spidey’s movie.
There was a script - but it wasn’t actually finished before filming began. In fact, it was about halfway through the filming process that anyone heard of how the movie might end - but even still - it continued to change! They did film quite a bit - including days and days of more re-shoots than normal. With all that footage, it’s not too surprising that Sam Raimi’s first cut of the movie came in at two hours and forty minutes. That being said - fingers crossed there will be plenty of deleted footage and extended scenes shared in the end - especially the alternate ending that caught us all off guard. This film changed multiple times, but with each chaotic change, they came one step closer to bringing this epic movie to the screen.
