General Douglas MacArthur remains one of the most consequential and controversial military figures in American history, having presided over a number of international conflicts in the mid-20th century. With an undeniable role in halting the expansion of post-world-war Communism, MacArthur nonetheless took part in human rights violations, also committing insubordination at key moments in different conflicts. His ambition appeared poised to carry him to America's highest office, but, as he said in his own words, old soldiers never die, they just fade away.
