December 17th, 2016. “The Cat” Oleksandr Uysk (Олекса́ндр Олекса́ндрович У́сикvs) made his United States debut against Thabiso “The Rock” Mchunu in the 1st defense of his WBO Cruiserweight Championship in Inglewood, California.

It was the primary undercard fight in the Bernard Hopkins vs. Joe Smith Jr main event.

Prefight records; Usyk 10(9)-0, Mchunu 17(11)-2.

In September 2016, Usyk dominated Krzysztof Glowacki to become the WBO Cruiserweight Champion via UD12.

For his 1st defense, he was up against the southpaw from KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

Entering his 1st world title fight, the 28 year old Mchunu had top wins over Olanrewaju Durodola & Eddie Chambers while the 29 year old Usyk had a notable triumph over Krzysztof Glowacki.

The supremely skilled Usyk overwhelmed Mchunu with his incessant volley of punches and elusive footwork to successfully retained his WBO Cruiserweight Championship and improved his perfect professional record to 11(10)-0.

In rounds 1 & 2, Mchunu connected with a couple of rights and lefts upstairs to evidently win both rounds as Usyk was largely utilizing his right jab to find his rhythm and create openings.

In round 3, Usyk began to open up with his left hand and found some success upstairs.

In round 4, both fighters were able to counter effectively but Usyk had the slight upper hand.

In round 5, Usyk unleashed his left hand in full to land nearly 4x as many punches as Mchunu.

In round 6, Mchunu was floored courtesy of a thunderous left uppercut.

In round 7, Mchunu connected with a number of head shots to rebound from the previous round.

In round 8, Usyk once again outlanded Mchunu who had his moments every now then.

In round 9, Usyk scored 2 more knockdowns with incessant salvos of punches on Mchunu. Referee Lou Moret waved off the bout at the second knockdown to save the courageous challenger from unnecessary punishment.
