On Sunday, June 9, the French went to the polls to elect their representatives in the European Parliament. Little did they imagine then that, a few hours later, President Macron would dissolve the Assemblée Nationale, thus precipitating the possibility of far-right leader Jordan Bardella taking Prime Minister Gabriel Attal's place, should his party win a majority in the snap parliamentary elections. Nor could they have foreseen that the country's conservatives would be tearing themselves apart over leader Eric Ciotti's unilateral decision to make a political alliance with the Rassemblement National (which led to him being ousted), and that the left would succeed in forging an alliance.
