In anticipation for the all-new and much anticipated 2020 Lincoln Aviator that is arriving Summer of 2019, I thought it would be fun to take a detailed, in-depth look at the First Generation Lincoln Aviator. As it would happen, this is a 2003, which is the first model year that was available. Despite it being based on the Ford Explorer/Mercury Mountaineer platform, Lincoln went to great lengths to differentiate the Aviator in the premium midsize luxury SUV segment, thus creating the "Baby Navigator". The Lincoln Aviator is V8 powered, however, that motivation is not from the Explorer/Mountaineer SOHC variety, but rather the Mustang Mach 1-sourced Modular 4.6L DOHC 32V series, providing 63 MORE horsepower than the SOHC variant. The Aviator was only produced from model years 2003-2005. Offering more luxury and equipment compared to the Explorer/Mountaineer counterparts, the Aviator, while the shortest Lincoln ever produced, was much like the Navigator in every respect, save overall dimensions. In looks, they were near identical. Ironically, the same holds true with the new 2020 Aviator! Loosely based on the Ford Explorer platform, but being heavily modified to make it genuine Lincoln and being a sort of "Baby Navigator" in its own right, this video highlight of the original mid-size luxury SUV is very fitting indeed!
The Aviator shown here is painted in Mineral Gray Metallic and features the Light Parchment leather interior. This Aviator, in 2003, stickered for $47,325, which equates to $68,150 in today's dollar.
