Five years after the nuclear disaster of March 11, 2011, robots are on the front line preparing for the dismantling of the plant.
At dose levels that are fatal in a few minutes for humans, they will have to decontaminate the immediate surroundings of the power plant and the interior of the reactor buildings, identify and plug the holes that screen the reactor vessels, determine how far the fuel molten nuclear power flowed, and finally extract the still liquid corium from the bottom of the three reactor buildings.
Twenty-three different types of robots have already worked in Fukushima since the accident. But the challenges that await these remote-controlled soldiers are immense, sometimes insurmountable. Never has such a seriously damaged nuclear power plant been dismantled.
