In days of yore, back before the overlocker and coverstitch machine, what secret sorcery kept our raiment from unravelling? Lets talk’ seam treatments. How did the people of the Viking age put together their clothing and protect the precious fabric from wear and tear?

This video is part one of a small series, and in part one we are going to be looking at 3 simple seam treatments evidenced in the Viking Age. The simple run and fell seam, the split or flat felled seam, and a simple seam with binding along the raw edges.

These are the most basic ways that were used to join two pieces of fabric together and protect the seam allowances. We will look at some more complex methods in later videos, but these three ways of joining and finishing seams are all you need to get started assembling your basic garments.

Before we dive in, you will need to know how to do the three basic sewing stitches used in the viking age. Running stitch, back stitch and whip stitch. If you haven’t learnt these yet, don't panic, check out this video,    • Sew like a Viking! BEGINNERS Guide to...   which will take you through the techniques for each of these three stitches, and give you a sneak preview of one of the methods we will learn today!

Thank You so much for watching folks, and as always, if you have any questions or feedback, pop it in the comments below or come and find me on facebook!
