When you’re working on the planning stage of your novel, you will inevitably get to the part where you need to flesh out the magic system of your story. Some of you may opt to write a soft magic system that just brings a sense of awe and wonder to the reader. The rest of you, however, will likely opt for a harder magic system.

Now I want to be clear here. Hard and soft magic systems exist on a spectrum and you can fall anywhere on that gradient. It’s not either or, it’s likely more a bit of both. You need to figure out where you fall on that spectrum in order to know exactly how strict you want to be with your rules and limitations.

Luckily there are some steps you can follow to ensure you get the most out of any hard magic system you plan on building.
