On the one hand a fragile material, on the other hand extremely resistant to the high pressure peaks in the combustion chamber. The ceramic in spark plugs provides electrical insulation, i.e. ensures that the current takes exactly the right path through the inside of the spark plug. And it helps to dissipate the heat from the combustion chamber to the engine block so that the electrodes do not get too hot.
