A routine inspection of a northwest Gainesville home abruptly ended after a discovery that local law enforcement is now investigating: a tucked-away jar of human tongues.

GPD officials say six plastic gallon-sized jars filled with preserved human tongues were found Monday in the crawl space of a home off Northwest 16th Avenue during an inspection of the house’s foundation. Labels on the jars date to the 1960s.

The home was previously owned by a former University of Florida researcher and pathologist, Ronald Baughman, but is now owned by his ex-wife.

Jorge Campos, GPD spokesman, said Baughman indicated that the tongues were used for his research at the university, and stored in the crawl space to keep them cool.

“He’s been completely cooperative from the get-go,” Campos said.

Detectives are still working to verify the story, he said, but there’s no indication Baughman was trying to hide the tongues.

He added that research rules were different a few decades ago, and professors today generally aren’t allowed to take specimens out of labs.

“In Gainesville, it’s not frequent, but also not uncommon, that we come across specimens, from humans or animals,” Campos said.
