Here I drill holes in a customer's heavy clay lawn that also suffers from the shade. This lawn gets very boggy in Winter and struggles to drain.

Here I'm trying to make improvements by drilling holes as deep as possible (turned out to be around 8 to 9 inches due to hardcore underneath) and filling those holes with compost and soil.

By no means is this the only way to improve a clay lawn. regular compost dressing, aeration and applications of Humic acid will work wonders... as will adding charcoal (in small amounts).. but this video is to show you this particular method.

Recommended horticultural gypsum, something like this one https://amzn.to/41ymHil.

You can also look to start adding humid acid regularly through the year, and even adding in some microbes to work on the soil. This soil conditioner will also help to do both https://amzn.to/3ApQmyp

So the end result is we have "improved" the ground at this property. If we left it "as-is", then the same issues will return with boggy wet conditions. At least now it should drain better.. plus the removal of clay and addition of soil and compost is a great starting point to improve for the long term.

The Auger drill bit I used in this video: https://amzn.to/3h4wmZl (affiliate link to Amazon) (50mm x 600mm)

The larger Auger drill bit(never used but would be excellent on a soil that is less clay based): https://amzn.to/3y9qzHk (Amazon affiliate link)

The narrower drill bit I bought from screwfix (never used this BUT this item would be fantastic for regular deep aeration): https://www.screwfix.com/p/erbauer-au...
