His rendition of a song from the decade before, which he recorded in 1962 and titled "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," catapulted his career to new heights and earned him two Grammy Awards.

Bennett was also a supporter of the civil rights movement and participated in the 1965 marches from Selma to Montgomery. At the same time, though, he refused to perform in South Africa during the time of apartheid.

However, as the decade progressed, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones became more popular in the United States, which led to a decline in his importance.

Next came a slew of personal issues, including the dissolution of two marriages and an addiction to drugs.

Despite the discomfort, he continued to perform and recorded two songs with pianist Bill Evans.

His luck started to turn around when he brought on his son Danny to work as his manager and when he got back together with Ralph Sharon, who had been his pianist and musical director.

In the 1980s and 1990s, when the artist was already in his sixties, he was inundated with Grammy awards, which led to a resurrection of his career.

The celebrity, who had recently relocated to New York from Las Vegas, was able to get his career back on track with the help of his comeback album, which was released in 1986 and titled The Art of Excellence. After that, he released a tribute album to his musical idol, Frank Sinatra, titled Perfectly Frank, which topped the charts, and then in 1994, he released an album called MTV Unplugged, for which he was awarded the Grammy for album of the year.

In an interview with the Independent in 2008, Bennett stated that he was not astonished by his continued success and that it had not come as a surprise to him.

"Good music is just good music," he remarked. It makes no difference to me whether the person who is listening to me is a child or an adult. In point of fact, there are many ways in which I have absolutely no interest in the young.

"I have an interest in your age. Do you know that as people become older, they have the wisdom to learn how to correctly conduct their lives? When Duke Ellington was still alive, he expressed to me that he took great offence at the use of the word "category."

"There are no categories in music; a song is either good or it isn't, and I perform songs that are good, wonderful songs, created by the best songwriters in the world. They are durable because they possess such a high level of quality. Believe me, in the distant future, people will still be singing these tunes.

Bennett never lost his cool and continued to amass a growing number of devoted followers as a result. On the album that served as a sequel to 2006's Duets: An American Classic, on which he had previously performed duets with Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, and George Michael, he worked with a large number of younger singers, including Amy Winehouse, Queen Latifah, and Carrie Underwood, all of whom were devoted fans of his.

At the age of 88, he broke his own record by becoming the oldest living act to reach number one on the charts in the United States with the album Cheek to Cheek, which he recorded in collaboration with Lady Gaga. Gaga has stated that the album that was produced as a direct result of her collaboration with the "legend" is "the most important album of my career."

Soon after he became 90 years old, he gave an interview to the New York Times in which he said, "I could have retired 16 years ago, but I just love what I'm doing."Bennett gave his final performances with Gaga in 2021, five years after he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2016. During those five years, Bennett was closely identified with Gaga in the minds of younger fans.

At the time, he shared the following sentiment throughout his various social media platforms: "Life is a gift - even with Alzheimer's."
