Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian President, has thanked Britain for its ongoing support in an historic address to Parliament.

He described a visit to the War Rooms beneath White Hall, where the Ukrainian leader sat in an armchair from which Winston Churchill helped lead Britain through the Second World War.

“There is an armchair in the War Rooms - the famous Churchill armchair. The guide smiled and offered for me to sit down. He asked me, what did I feel? … But it is only now that I know what the feeling was.”

The surprise trip to Britain is the first time Mr Zelensky has visited the country since the start of Russia's invasion and only his second foreign trip during wartime.
