Have you ever tried to write some original blues riffs around dominant 7 chords? If you have, (but you didn’t know much about using blues scales), then I’d bet that you quickly found out how difficult blues riffs really are.
Without that blues scale knowledge, not only will your riffs sound kinda lame, but they probably won’t connect well into all the backing chords.
Imagine if you had a “trick weapon” in your scales arsenal that would allow you to quickly make all the blues lines that you’ve forever wanted. Well, I’m going to show you exactly how to do just that in this lesson.
If you ever wanted a blues pattern trick that could perfectly contribute to building blues riffs, then this lesson will be amazing for you. The first thing that you need to know about is that blues scales can perfectly cover the traditional sound of the dominant 7 chords used in classic blues progressions. The trick to doing it is using the “Major Pentatonic,” scale as your foundation.
While the sound of a basic 5-note Major Pentatonic scale may be a little bit limiting, you can actually stretch the Major Pentatonic sound by simply adding in a new 6th note to create a chromatic “bluesy” scale line.
The new note is a “Minor 3rd” and it creates a chromatic line from the scales; Major 2nd to Minor 3rd to Major 3rd. This additional note sounds amazing, and it instantly gives you the classic blues sound of all those famous players.
