How To Fit Laminate Flooring Around Radiator Pipes

In this short instructional video, part of our series on how to lay laminate flooring correctly, our very own fitter shows how to lay laminate around pipes, leaving the correct gaps for expansion. Radiator pipes can seem like a difficult thing to navigate when laying flooring. With the right tools it it fairly straightforward.

Tools:
Drill
Flat Wood Drill Bit
Pen or Pencil
Handsaw or Jigsaw

Technique

Step 1: Take Measurements
Take the board you intend to cut around the pipes, lay it flat and bring it up to the pipe.

Step 2: Marking for Precision
Make two pencil marks on the board on either side of the pipe to determine its width. Then, remove the board and place it next to the pipe, ensuring a spacer against the wall for expansion.

Step 3: Depth Measurement
Mark the front and back of the pipe on the board to indicate its depth. This ensures accurate cutting and a perfect fit.

Step 4: Drawing the Cut Lines
Using a flat edge or ruler, draw two vertical lines starting from the first set of marks up to the furthest of the second set. This defines the area to be removed to accommodate the pipe.

Step 5: Drilling for Precision
Use a flat drill bit to create a circular hole at the far end of the marked section. Remember to make the hole slightly larger than the pipe to allow for expansion.

Step 6: Precise Cutting
Once drilled, use a jigsaw or handsaw to cut along the parallel lines until you reach the drilled hole. This ensures a perfect fit around the radiator pipe, allowing for expansion.

Step 7: Retaining the Offcut
Don't discard the cutaway section; it will be useful later in the process.

Step 8: Seamless Integration
Refit the board, sliding the cut section around the radiator pipe, and use the offcut piece to fill the space behind the pipe. Secure it in place using silicone or foam allowing for expansion.

Step 9: Finishing Touch
Complete the process by covering the hole around the radiator pipe using a rosette trim or silicone. This provides a smart, clean finish.
