The first stage is where the PVC loses the flat, smooth matte finish it generally starts with, and becomes a bit glossy and a little bumpy. The second stage is where it begins to turn a light yellow. This yellow darkens until it becomes brown, which in turn becomes black, and the pipe begins to bubble and smoke.
