Last week three firefighters from the Kellogg Rural Fire District took a spin on the Oregon Department of Public Safety, Standards, and Training’s (DPSST) skid truck at the old Goshen Mill site in Lane County. The skid truck is a modified semi-truck with a set of “training wheels” that are controlled from within the vehicle. The system uses hydraulic rams and casters to lift the truck just enough to limit normal traction and simulate driving on wet pavement, snow, ice, etc. It’s like a rollercoaster ride for firefighters. With this system, DPSST is able to teach drivers how to stay calm while employing techniques that keep control when navigating hazardous conditions.
