Spain arrived at the Women's Soccer World Cup in Australia and New Zealand with a fantastic generation of soccer players, who were destined to win the first world championship for the "Red". The controversy was centered on the figure of the coach Jorge Vilda, who continued in office despite the fact that months before 15 players had demanded changes in their methodology to go to the national team. Faced with that rebellious gesture, the RFEF gave its support to the coach and that riot caused a renewal of the final call. Only 3 of the 15 rebels attended the World Cup, and the remaining 12 players were left without attending the tournament.

Despite that unfortunate event, Spain passed the first phase with authority, although its setback against Japan (4-0) made it play the qualifiers as second in the group. In the KO phase, the team demonstrated its power and reached the final after beating Switzerland (1-5), the Netherlands (2-1) and Sweden (2-1).

In the final against England, Spain was superior and took the victory with a great goal from Olga Carmona. The Sevillian goal gave Spanish women's football its first star, which lifted the World Cup and made women's football enter another dimension.
