A playthrough of Nintendo's 1990 sports game for the Nintendo Game Boy, Golf.

This video shows two stroke play games - one on the Japan course, and one on the USA course. The USA game begins at 20:27.

Like Nintendo's Baseball, the early NES classic Golf got a full "remake" for the company's brand new handheld system. And like Baseball, Golf's Game Boy port far exceeds its NES counterpart in terms of graphics, sound, controls, and overall content.

There are now two fully-featured courses to play on, and both stroke and match play modes are available. The general flow of play is similar to the NES title - you hit the ball using the standard "three click swing" mechanic that most golf games of the era made use of, but it's much easier to hit the ball the way you want to in this one. The gauge spans the width of the screen now, so you can hit shots with a level of precision that was virtually impossible in the original.

The Game Boy version also officially features Mario (not "Ossan" this time!), on the box and in-game. That's pretty neat.

The graphics are very clear for the Game Boy, and it's hard to understate what an improvement the pixel art truly is over the 1984 game. The soundtrack also goes a long way in livening things up - it plays through most of the game, and though it repeats endlessly, it's both catchy and pleasant without being annoying or intrusive.

While it might not stray too far from the formula set by the original NES Golf, the updates and improvements easily make this the better title. Good stuff if you're a fan of video game golf!
