There's coffee, and there's good coffee. Luckily good coffee is very easy to make as long as you get three basics right.
1) Use freshly roasted coffee beans and ditch the instant coffee
2) Grind coffee beans just before you brew for maximum freshness
3) Match your grind size to the brewing style
It's really that simple.
Freshly roasted coffee beans are very easily available and you can find many online vendors who roast in small batches. Most craft roasters also put a roasted on date so you know exactly how fresh these beans are.
Grinders come in all shapes and sizes from really cheap manual grinders to electric grinders. Whichever you go for, use a burr grinder. Burr grinders grind much more evenly.
Finally, you have brewing methods. Broadly speaking, brewing methods use either pressure, gravity, or immersion.
Most brewing methods fall under these categories. Espresso for example is a pressure brew. Drip coffee is a gravity brew, and french press is an immersion brew.
For your first coffee, I suggest brewing with french press as it's the least involved brewing method. It's a very forgiving brew, and the flavor is rich and bold.
Once you taste fresh coffee, you'll never go back to supermarket coffee again.
