In this music education program, Maestro George Marriner Maull challenges viewers to become aware of the difference between hearing and listening. Using Movement 3 of the Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta by Bela Bartok, viewers are invited to become insiders in the ways of composers and to notice details right from the start. Maull demonstrates compositional tools on the piano and instructs viewers to tally how many times they hear a five note pattern in the excerpt. He then elaborates on the pattern, using sequencing, imitation, stretto, retrograde motion, range change, diminution, and crescendo. Viewers listen to the excerpt a final time with new knowledge of composition detail.
