0:06 So just what are those holes in each side of the cylinder head for?

0:14 Turns out, those are where "Tubing G" pieces are to be inserted to represent the spark plug wires.

0:24 Box art photo of assembled kit backs this up!

0:38 Real XS-Eleven? Different spark plug wire installation altogether!

0:51 Recessed location of hole makes it impractical to plug with traditional methods like styrene rod or stretched parts runner because of difficulty to access this area for sanding.

1:05 An acceptable "cheat" is placing piece of .015" styrene strip over the hole.

1:17 Drill an .032" diameter hole in flat section at top of fins. Drill at a slight angle...

1:28...so a bolt head casting, Tichy Train group #8085 here, can be glued in to represent hex portion of spark plug.

1:41 Let solvent cement cure at least overnight before the next step which is drilling .020" diameter hole in centre of hex to allow installation of spark plug wire. If you try to drill before cement has cured thoroughly, bolt head casting will still be soft and result of drilling is a gummy mess. (Voice of experience!)

1:56 Spark plug wires are .020" diameter black wire with plug boots made using short pieces of air hose material supplied in AMT's truck kits. Longer boots are for outer plugs, shorter ones for the inner pair.

2:14 Plug wires set in place for photo. Inner pair fit into holes provided in kit part, these two holes actually are fairly accurate to the 1:1 engine as these two plugs are accessed through recesses in top of cylinder head casting.

2:26 One detail not provided on model is the clutch cable that extends vertically out of clutch housing in this close up of real XS-Eleven.

2:39 Even instruction sheet illustration of a real bike shows this part so it is a surprising omission considering how well other details are replicated in this kit, but an easy item to add.

2:52 Start with .032" diameter hole in top of clutch housing, at approximately the "1:00 o-clock" mark. Enlarge this hole with progressively larger drills...

3:06...until it is 1/16" diameter.

3:19 This allows a short piece of 1/16" diameter aluminum tube, with end tapered slightly, to be glued in place representing fitting at end of clutch cable. Black wire approximately .030" diameter is used to represent the clutch cable itself. Clutch cable and spark plug wires will of course be installed later, they are just set in place for photo at this stage of assembly.

3:33 One last detail for this installment is two .025" diameter rivets, Tichy Train group #8018, representing fasteners on clutch housing cover.
