Pope Francis arrived in Indonesia on September 3, 2024, as he began the first leg of an ambitious Asia-Pacific tour scheduled to last 12 days. The visit was described as a bid to cement the Catholic Church’s position in the region and is taking place despite growing health problems the 87-year-old faces. Francis is expected to participate in an interfaith meeting at Jakarta's Istiqlal Mosque. The building has an unusual feature – a tunnel connecting it to the city's Catholic cathedral. The pontiff is also scheduled to visit Papua New Guinea, East Timor and Singapore.
