WIP is a solo piano work written following a study of Ketih Emerson's compostitional style. I was mostly interested in his use of counterpoint in his rock music. I modeled the entire piece from Emerson's 2nd Impression (Karn Evil 9). Both works use the common fast-slow-fast form found in many classical works. The most glaring departure from the 2nd Impression is the use two alternating synthetic scales: 1,b2,3,#4,5,b6,b7 and 1,b2,#3,#4,5,b6,b7. This allowed me a lot of creative license while letting me stay in a more tonal vein. This performance took place at the University of North Texas Recital Hall in March of 1999.
