Critical to using your pistol's sights correctly, so you can hit targets, is sight alignment - the process of lining up the front and rear sights. The magic formula for correct sight alignment is "Equal Height, Equal Light". This means the top of the front sight is lined up with the top of the rear sight ("equal height"), AND when you look through the notch in the rear sight, there is an equal amount of light on either side of the front sight. You superimpose that on the target to get your "sight picture". The tops of the aligned front and rear sights should bisect the target horizontally. One problem: you have three objects (rear sight, front sight, and target) at three different distances. Your eyes can only focus on one. Which should it be? The FRONT sight. The rear sight will be blurry, as will the target. Next, should you aim with one eye open or both? While there are benefits to shooting with both eyes open, when you first start learning, it's best to have only your strong-side eye open. A lot of front sights have bright dots on them; if you focus on the dot, you will actually end up shooting a bit off the target. Concentrate on the TOP of the front sight. Also, avoid switching your focus repeatedly between the target and the front sight. Stay focused on that front sight!
