Special thank you to Jared Enos, for granting permission to use his colorized Old West photos in this video. See his other amazing photo transformations at:   / photos

Today we're looking at the historical appearance and clothing of Cowboys in the American West. For this week I used a variety of photo archives from the late-1800s. I also used primary source accounts from Hamlin Garland, and D.W. Wilder's 1882 book, 'The Annals of Kansas'. Additionally, I consulted an article by Emily Jane McTavish, Jared E. Decker, Robert D. Schnabel, Jeremy F. Taylor, and David M. Hillis titled, 'New World Cattle Show Ancestry from Multiple Independent Domestication Events,' that traced the migration of cattle from Europe to the New World. And last, I used an article by University of Washington professor, David Goldstein-Shirley called 'Black Cowboys in the American West: A Historiographical Review,' for statistics on cowboy ethnic and racial diversity in the American West during the late 1800s.

About Man vs History: Man vs History is a YouTube channel that endeavors to combine both education and entertainment, specifically related to history. While the focus of the channel will expand beyond analyzing the historical accuracy of RDO, for the time being, there's still more quality videos to come on the topic. For the past decade I've been history professor at the college level. The knowledge and skills I acquired through my educational journey and profession are put to work in the creation of these videos, allowing me to locate rare primary source materials, analyze them carefully, and coherently deliver the content in an entertaining and educational manner.

For each one I conduct an immense amount of research, scouring American and British archives, books, and scholarly journal articles. Gratefully, my profession also grants me access to a network of historical experts & specialists including authors, university professors, and museum curators. I hope you enjoy the end result!
