This is a Motormouth couple ar review of the all-new 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback. Our test model is the top Sport Touring trim with a 6-speed manual transmission in Blue Boost, a new colour for 2022. This new Hatchback offers driving enthusiasts an even more dynamic experience with ride and handling developed in Europe and an up-graded 6-speed manual transmission available with both the 2L and 1.5L turbocharged engines. In the US, the manual transmission is not available on the base model but in Canada all trims offer both transmissions. Honda says, this is the most fun to drive Civic Hatchback ever. It’s built for the very first time in the US at Honda’s Greensburg, Indiana plant. There are two engine choices, a 1.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder with a 6-speed manual or a CVT, 180 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque, standard FWD. You can put regular fuel in this Civic. The base engine is a 2L 4-cylinder matched with a CVT or 6-speed manual, 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque. The hatchback has been fine tuned for a quieter ride with updated door handles and a noiseless roof plus an updated suspension and steering tuned for improved handling and ride comfort. There are ground-breaking new front airbags designed to reduce the risk of traumatic brain and neck injuries and rear seat side airbags. Inspired by the coupe-like profile of European sportbacks, this Civic offers a modern, clean and simple design with a longer wheelbase compared to the outgoing model by 1.4 inches. The hatchbacks rear overhang and overall length is 4.9 inches shorter than the Civic sedan.
The hatchback has a distinctive mesh grille with standard LED headlights, available fog lights, mirror-integrated LED turn signals, 16” wheels are standard on the base trim, all other trims get 18” wheels in Canada. In the US, the EX-L trim comes with 17” wheels. There is a touch of elegance to this Civic hatchback with the striking honeycomb mesh accent that stretches across the dash from door to door hiding the air vents and creating a uncluttered design. Honda says, it focused on high quality materials especially on touch points. Materials were chosen for practicality including the centre console design to hide smudges and fingerprints.
The Civic hatchback’s second row legroom has been improved by nearly 1.4 inches and rear headroom has been preserved. The cargo area is spacious and more easily accessible thanks to a 1.6” wider lower hatch opening. The standard 60/40 split seatback can be folded to expand the cargo capacity.
Compared to the competition like the Mazda3 Sport, Toyota Corolla and the Volkswagen GTI, the Civic Hatchback and Corolla offer the most front legroom. The Civic offers the most second row legroom with 37.4 inches of space and when it comes to cargo capacity behind the second row the Civic Hatchback is the clear winner with 24.5 cubic feet. The base trim comes with quite a few standard features like a 7” touchscreen, cloth upholstery, heated front seats, manual driver and passenger seats plus Apple Carplay and Android Auto. One up from the base model is where you’ll find the moonroof, a heated leather wrapped steering wheel and a combination of synthetic leather and cloth upholstery. The top Sport Touring trim we are testing has a 9” touchscreen, 10.2” digital driver display, wireless charger, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, power driver and passenger seats, heated rear seats, leather trimmed seating surfaces and a Bose 12-speaker audio system.
