💭 According to Jewish tradition, Solomon wrote Song of Solomon during his younger years, Proverbs in his middle years, and the Book of Ecclesiastes during the last years of his life. The accumulative effect of Solomon’s spiritual decline, idolatry, and life of self-indulgence left him at the end disillusioned with pleasure and materialism as a way to happiness. Ecclesiastes records his cynical reflections about the futility and emptiness of seeking happiness in life apart from God and His Word. Solomon had experienced wealth, power, honor, fame, and sensual pleasure – all in great abundance – yet they added up in the end to emptiness and disillusionment.

🔍 His primary purpose in writing the Book of Ecclesiastes may have been to share his regrets and his first-hand testimony before he died, especially with young people, so that they would not make the same mistakes he had. He establishes forever the utter futility of basing one’s values in life on earthly possessions and personal ambition. The book concludes by instructing youths to remember God while they are young so that they do not grow old with bitter regrets and the sad task of giving an account to God for a wasted life.
