In the early days only the rich could afford the expensive invention, but the car quickly became an object of desire for increasing numbers of people. It promised not only mobility, but also status, and freedom. How did the automobile conquer the hearts the people so quickly? Why has the relationship turned sour for many today? Cars are still major polluters and held partly responsible for climate change. Is automania now turning to autophobia?
