These step-by-step instructions and video detail how to replace the tail light bulbs on a 2012 Ford F-150 XLT, and the replacement steps will be similar on a lot of F-150s from 2009 to 2014. Replacing a burned out or failing tail light bulb helps you see clearly, follow road laws, and lets other drivers know of your truck’s presence on the road. If your F-150’s tail light bulbs are burned out or malfunctioning, you should replace both tail light bulbs together since they will likely fail at around the same time. O’Reilly Auto Parts carries headlight bulbs, tail light bulbs, and other exterior light bulbs for your Ford F-150 to help you make your repairs.

The tail lights on your Ford F-150 help you be seen in poor weather or darkness, and are required by law to work properly. Changing a dim, flickering, or burned out tail light bulb on your 2009-2014 Ford F-150 is a simple repair that can help you see better while driving. It’s recommended that when changing one tail light bulb, the other should be replaced as well, since both bulbs have been used for the same amount of time and will likely fail around the same age. Failing taillight bulbs on your Ford F-150 can make it difficult for other drivers to see your vehicle on the road, and could put you and others in danger. Our detailed instructions can help you perform a taillight bulb replacement on your Ford F-150 to keep you safe on the road.

Once you’ve got your supplies together, here’s what you’ll do:
Park on a level surface… and open your tailgate.
Use a ratchet and 8mm socket to remove the two bolts securing the tail light assembly.
Pull the assembly back directly toward the rear of the truck to disengage it from the plastic tabs.
Turn each of the sockets counterclockwise to remove them from the back of the assembly… then set the
assembly aside.
Remove the bulb you need to replace by pulling it straight out of its socket.
Push the new bulb into its socket.
Repeat this for each bulb that needs to be replaced.
Secure the bulbs in their sockets in the tail light assembly by turning them clockwise into place.
Push the assembly back into place, making sure to align the plastic tabs.
Replace the two 8mm bolts you removed previously.
We recommend changing tail light bulbs in pairs, so repeat these steps on the other side.
Close the tailgate if you like.
