Introduction:

In this piano review video, Stu Harrison of Merriam Pianos guides us through an overview of Kawai’s full range of digital pianos, including the ES, CN, KDP, CA, and MP series. Kawai digital pianos are renowned for their rich piano tone and authentic touch, as well as their focus on the home and institutional customer vs gigging professionals.

Kawai KDP Series:

Kawai’s KDP70 and KDP110 have become some of their most successful models in the company’s history, selling 10,000’s worldwide of both models since their introduction in 2018.

Their primary characteristics are a full wooden cabinet with triple pedal system, the Compact Action II, which features a triple sensor, the EX Concert Grand sample set, key cover and music desk, and in the case of the KDP110, #Bluetooth Midi.

Kawai CN Series:

The CN Series is the next level up from the KDP, and mark substantial increases in action quality, speaker quality and power, and tone generator. They are still considered piano-focused instruments with few additional features, but much better suited to advanced players or high use situations such as institutional placements (chuches, rehearsal instruments etc).

For those looking for a piano-only experience on a budget, the CN series is an impressive choice with few downsides.

Kawai CA Series:

The CA Series is Kawai’s wood action, multi-speaker, high-fi digital piano series. This series is built for customers who have the budget and the musical aptitude to warrant an acoustic, but can’t or would prefer not to get one for any variety of reasons...whether they want the digital integrations, the low maintenance, lack of humidity control, or noise management in a condo or townhouse.

Kawai ES Series:

The Kawai ES Series is their response to the Roland FP or Yamaha P series - portable ‘all-in-one’ units which deliver great sound and features in a compact package.

The ES110 is virtually the KDP110 without the furniture, whereas the ES8 was developed entirely separate from any other Kawai model. The control interface, speaker system, and feature set are unique to the entire brand. It has the RHIII action like the CN series, a specially-designed speaker box which delivers great bass response, and recording and intelligent accompaniment with rhythms as well.

Kawai MP Series:

The MP Series is Kawai’s Pro-only line, which would directly compete against Yamaha’s CP4, CP300, and Roland’s RD line. They are stage instruments built for live performance, studio use, and production. The MP7 focuses on a traditional controller/stage piano use case, whereas the MP11 is the only portable example of Kawai’s full-length wood key action in a piano.
Conclusions:

Kawai is a company which has focused like a laser-beam on it’s digital piano lineup over the last 10 years, the results being that multiple models now dominate the premium digital piano marketplace - ES110, CN29, CA78, Novus 10, ES8, MP11, and more. For piano players at any stage, and whether for professional or personal use, #Kawai has become a must-see manufacturer when shopping in the mid or upper range of the market.
