The recent war left many disabled veterans without the care they need. Health facilities across the region were largely destroyed by the fighting. Now cuts in U.S. foreign aid have sent overwhelmed care providers scrambling to find new sources of funding. There are more than 43,000 Tigrayan former combatants. One of them says he spends most of his time in bed as bits of shrapnel remain in his body. Some former fighters with missing limbs can be seen begging to feed themselves and their families.
