The Heal the Healers Now (HTHN) initiative, now in its fourth year of programming, initially focused on training individual healthcare workers but has grown to include the healthcare workforce as a whole. Currently the Foundation works with health systems across the country to bring systemic change to benefit the entire hospital workforce, including physicians, nurses, other healthcare personnel, and administrative and support staff. Hospital leaders who have participated in the HTHN program have implemented it into onboarding for new hires and mental health awareness programs, including offering professional development credits for participating staff. In addition, wellness rooms and protected time breaks in the day have been established to allow employees time to learn and practice TM on shift. When hospital leadership participate in the program and learn TM, they gain first-hand experience of the value of the program, resulting in a direct improvement in the culture of safety and health in the workplace.

Research on the program has been conducted at eight academic medical centers to date, including: Duke University Medical Center, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, University of Michigan Medical Center, Georgetown University School of Medicine, Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, and Moffitt Cancer Center. Seven of these studies have been published in peer-reviewed journals including JAMA Network Open, the Journal of the American College of Emergency Physicians Open, and the Online Journal of Issues in Nursing. These studies have consistently found significant improvements in healthcare worker burnout, mental health and well-being as a result of the program. These findings are consistent with previously published research on the impact of TM on mental and physical health in other populations.

In New York City, one of the largest partnerships of HTHN is with NYC Health + Hospitals. As the largest public healthcare system in the country, NYC H+H serves over one million patients every year. The hospital system has a presence across all five boroughs with 11 hospitals, 4 post-acute centers, and over 70 community health clinics. Their employee wellness program, Helping Healers Heal (H3), promotes peer support for all hospitals and has included Heal the Healers Now in 21 of their sites as a core modality to address healthcare provider burnout and toxic stress.

Jeremy Segall, System Chief Wellness Officer of NYC H+H, shares that, “Transcendental Meditation is not just about doctors and nurses. It’s for everyone…It’s for all essential workers, which is what healthcare is at this point in time. We are all essential.” The Central Office staff has continued to elevate the initiative because of the inclusivity and the support given to every single staff member.

The David Lynch Foundation addresses the devastating epidemic of trauma and toxic stress among at-risk populations through the evidence-based Transcendental Meditation ® practice in order to improve health, boost brain and cognitive capabilities, and increase happiness in life.
