The EQS sedan has been a very important vehicle for Mercedes-Benz, showcasing the company's burgeoning EQ electric sub-brand while pushing the boundaries of automotive technology, aerodynamics and luxury. Yet, as monumental as this car is, it's still a drifting car in a sea of SUVs. Which makes the new 2023 EQS SUV quite a surprising development, even if it is almost certain to have even greater importance in the market.

With base prices ranging from $105,450 to $127,000, the same as the low-top EQS, the EQS SUV is a plush people mover that operates in near silence. Think of it as an electric GLS-Class, it's 3.2 inches shorter overall, but with a 3.0-inch longer wheelbase. The practicalities of using the SUV mean that it replaces the diamond-shaped exterior of its four-door counterpart with a more conventional, upright design that potential buyers should find comfortably familiar. That it can also swallow up to seven occupants via an optional third row of seats won't hurt. With a coefficient of drag of just 0.26, the EQS SUV is sleek for a utility vehicle, which, along with its plain black nose studded with three-pointed stars, helps it draw the line between traditional and futuristic. From certain angles, its cab-forward proportions and a roof 4.2 inches lower than that of a GLS give this EQS the vibe of a minivan, but with an elegance that Benz's old R-Class didn't. never reached.

As the first SUV to be built on the company's EVO 2 platform - work that takes place at Mercedes' Tuscaloosa, Alabama plant - the EQS SUV rides on the same 126.4-inch wheelbase as the four-door EQS and shares its floor-mounted power and battery units, although capacity is up slightly to 108.4 kWh. The standard EQS450+ model has a single motor on its rear axle which is good for 355 horsepower and 419 lb-ft of torque. An all-wheel-drive 450 4Matic version adds a front-axle motor that boosts combined torque to 590 lb-ft without changing the overall pony count. Topping the lineup is the twin-motor EQS580 4Matic with its 536 horsepower and 633 lb-ft. Three trim levels - Premium, Exclusive and Pinnacle - vary in degree of tech and opulence, but all feel rich enough inside.

As you'd expect from a bigger, heavier vehicle that punches a bigger hole in the atmosphere, the SUV has a shorter estimated range than the four-door EQS: 305 EPA-rated miles for the 450+ and 285 miles for the 4Matic models, compared to 350 and 340 miles, respectively, for the EQS450 and 580 sedans. Those are still decent numbers, though, and the EQS580 was one of the few EVs to beat its official estimate in our tests. Such real-world efficiency bodes well for the mechanically similar SUV, but we'll confirm that when we get one to test. Mercedes says a 240-volt outlet will charge the SUV from 10-100% in just over 11 hours, with 10-80% fills on a DC fast charger that can produce the EQS's maximum 200kW in 31 minutes.

The electrification of the Mercedes-Benz range has taken a bold step with the EQS range. One of the latest models is the EQS 580 4MATIC SUV. This all-electric vehicle is steeped in sophistication. From its decadent design to its elite features and impressive performance, the EQS 580 4MATIC SUV is a magnificent model for today's select drivers in the Fort Mitchell area. What can you expect from this new addition to the Mercedes-EQ range?

Powering the EQS 580 4MATIC SUV are a pair of electric motors driven by a 107.8 kilowatt-hour battery. These motors are mounted on both axles for a 4MATIC all-wheel-drive driving experience. The engines produce 536 horsepower. With the fast charge function, you can go from 10% charge to 80% charge in about 31 minutes.

This model offers a variety of paint, wheel, upholstery and trim options. Standard features include LED headlights, heated and ventilated front seats, leather upholstery, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and a Burmester 3D audio system with Dolby Atmos™. Other features include 21-inch wheels, MBUX HyperDisplay with a 17.7-inch OLED center display and 12.3-inch dashboard, AMG Line exterior and Driver Assistance Package.
