Hey guys,
We are into the fall season and I have a lot of water left over in my rainwater harvesting tanks. If I leave the water here throughout the winter, the tanks would burst, so I need to empty them. I can’t just open the values and let the water flow out because I don’t want to risk flooding my septic field or having some of the water end up seeping into my basement. The other option is to use the water around the yard to soak the soil around my trees. This will help them better endure a cold winter as well. I’ll let gravity empty the tanks through an old firehose.
I’ll connect my old fire hose to the valve here. Since there is no added pressure from a pump, I can use this fitting without an adhesive. This hose is about 20 years old and would probably blow-out if it were under pressure.
The hose will need to be somewhat straight with no kinks. I’ll fast forward through this. Ok, here is the first tree to dump some of this water.
Let’s open the valve and you can see the hose filling up right away. The water is pushing out any air in the hose and while the hose is relatively light, I can walk with it use the little bit of air pressure to unkink the line.
Perfect, looks like the water is here. And check this out, it’s a decent amount. I’ll place the nozzle right here and let the water flow down the little hill into the tree well.
I’ll let the water flow out and soak the ground around this tree and come back in 10 minutes.
Here is 25 minutes of footage in 12 seconds.
In the meanwhile, I emptied out first and the third tanks and I’m very happy that I could water so many of the trees on the front of my property in preparation for winter.
I then proceed to empty the remaining tanks. Each tank takes about 4 hours to dump.
After the tanks are empty, I like to remove the ball valves for the winter season. There is no need of them weathering in the sun for the next 6 months.
