Film director Scott Derrickson returns to his terror roots and partners again with the leading brand in the genre, Blumhouse, with a new horror thriller titled The Black Phone. Finney Shaw, a shy but intelligent 13-year-old boy is kidnapped by a sadistic killer and trapped in a soundproof basement where screaming is ineffective. When a disconnected phone on the wall starts to ring, Finney realizes he can hear the killer's previous victims' voices. And they are determined that what happened to them does not happen to Finney.
The Black Phone is produced, directed, and co-written by Scott Derrickson, the writer-director of Sinister, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, and Marvel's Doctor Strange.
It stars four-time Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke in the most terrifying role of his career and introduces Mason Thames in his first film role.
Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill (Doctor Strange, Sinister franchise) wrote the screenplay, which is based on Joe Hill's award-winning short story from his New York Times bestseller 20th Century Ghosts. Derrickson & Cargill's Crooked Highway produced the film, which was presented by Universal and Blumhouse. The film's producers are Jason Blum, Scott Derrickson, and C. Robert Cargill, with Ryan Turek and Christopher H. Warner serving as executive producers.
The Cast Include: Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, James Ransone and Ethan Hawk.
The Black Phone is set to be released in the United States on June 24 2022, by Universal Pictures. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, with praise for its faithfulness to the source material, Derrickson's direction, and Ethan Hawke's performance as the antagonist.
