These detailed instructions and video detail a headlight bulb replacement on a 2017 Subaru Outback, and are similar to procedures on 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 Outback models. Replacing a burned out or failing headlight bulb helps you see more clearly, follow state traffic laws, and provides other drivers and pedestrians with a warning of your vehicle’s presence. Find the headlight bulbs, tail light bulbs, brake lights, and other exterior light bulbs for your Subaru Outback, either in-store or online

Your 2010 to 2014 Subaru Outback’s headlights help you see where your vehicle is headed, and can improve your visibility during poor weather or at night. Working headlights help you avoid a traffic ticket, and you will see better and drive safer when you replace a dim, flickering, or burned out headlight bulb. It’s recommended that you replace headlight bulbs in pairs on your 2010 to 2014 Subaru, even if only one is underperforming, since they are likely the same age and will typically burn out around the same time. Bad headlight bulbs make it hard for other drivers to see your Outback on the road, which can put you and others in danger. These step-by-step instructions from O’Reilly Auto Parts can guide you through a headlight bulb replacement on your Subaru Outback so you can see and be seen clearly on the road

Park on a level surface… and turn your steering wheel away from the side where you’ll be working.
Use your flathead screwdriver or trim tool to remove the tabs securing the wheel well cover.
With the tabs removed, you should be able to move the cover out of the way enough to see the back of the headlight assembly, but you may need a flashlight to see clearly.
Your low beam bulb is behind the circular plastic cover.
Turn the cover slightly counterclockwise to disengage it… and remove it.
Pull gently on the wiring harness at the back of the bulb to unplug it from the bulb itself.
The wire clip securing the bulb can be slipped out of the notch holding it in place, and should then hinge out of the way.
Now, the bulb can be removed.
Take note of the bulb’s orientation as you remove it… there’s a tab on the bulb itself that will fit into a specific slot on the housing.
Be sure not to touch your new bulb with bare fingers.
Finger oil or grease can create hot spots on the glass that significantly shorten the lifespan of the bulb.
Lift it into place, making sure the tab slips into its slot on the housing.
