There is a hidden meaning behind the names of some of the new characters to the franchise. In Swahili, Zira, Kovu and Nuka mean words that link to the traits of their characters. Zira means “hate”, linking to her part as the villain of the movie. Kovu means “scar”, referring to his destiny as being Scar’s heir and also his similar appearance to the villain of the first movie. Nuka means “bad smell”, being a nod to how the character is seen as unwanted and annoying until his death later in the movie.
