I can't believe this is Seoul.....Yup, it’s time for Suyu-dong, a ‘dong’ next to Bukhansan National Park, which hasn’t always been a part of Seoul. Until 1949 it was part of Goyang city and known as Suyu-ri (Suryu Village). It was an agricultural village with few houses and lots of farming fields. During my visit, I noticed that most of the aged still call it Suyu-ri…I guess you can take the RI out of the girl but not the girl out of the RI (right, @Agata?). One thing that took my breath away was the scenic view of the surrounding mountains. It didn’t feel anywhere near Seoul, but it was Seoul. That gave me an unreal feeling. But it’s no ri no more. There were no agricultural fields or cows in the garden, but somehow it felt like a countryside village. Calm, peaceful, low-rise buildings, and less than the usual Seoul traffic. That doesn’t mean it has to be boring. The local Hwagyesa Temple is stunning, and a few historic landmarks are worth a visit. Welcome to my Dong.

여기 서울 맞나요? 넵 이번에는 수유동 차례입니다. 북한산 공원 옆에 있는 동네이고 항상 서울이었던 곳은 아니에요. 1949년까지 고양시에 속해있었고 수유리라고 불리던 곳이었습니다. 집 몇 채와 논밭으로 가득했던 농업지역인 곳이었지요. 제가 방문했을 때 어르신들은 여전히 수유리라고 부르시기도 합니다. 이름에서 '리'를 뺄 수는 있어도 사람에서 '리'를 뺄 수는 없나봐요. 숨이 멎도록 아름다운 산에 둘러싸여 있는 이 곳은 서울임에도 먼 시골에 온 것 같은 느낌을 줍니다. 정말 비현실적이었어요. 하지만 '리'는 더 이상 남아있지 않았어요. 논 밭과 우리 안의 소들은 찾아볼 수 없었어요. 그러나 작은 건물들이 옹기종기 모여있는 이 동네는 여전히 평화롭고 조용했습니다. 서울의 교통 또한 훨씬 적었어요. 그렇다고 재미 없는 동네는 아닙니다! 화계사 절은 눈부시게 아름답고 가볼만한 역사적인 장소들도 있어요. 웰컴 투 마이 동!
