One of the first things I was taught when I first started to play pickleball was...

...always reset when you are attacked.

The guy who told me that was a 5.0 player so I took that to heart and I did it among the many other things that I was taught.

A lot of things made sense and worked out pretty well for a time but whenever I got up to the NVZ Line, I always felt like I was the first one to be attacked on my heels.

I would dink and wait for a pop up to come but before that could ever happen I got attacked.

It seemed to happen on every point.

I felt like I was getting attacked mercilessly and I just kept resetting.

They'd attack again.

I was also told never to back off the NVZ Line.

Something wasn't adding up.

The combination of always resetting when attacked as well as never backing up didn't seem right to me but I was so new that I just kept on doing what I was being taught by the 5.0s that I was playing with.

Then someone asked me: "Why are you always resetting every time you get attacked?"

I said: "Because that's what I was taught to do"

They said: " Well, that's not entirely true. If your opponent attacks on a "bad ball”, which is a ball that they made contact with below the level of the net, then you attack right back at them because they have to hit up to clear the net therefore you'll be able to hit down on it and make them pay.”

I said: "OK, that makes a lot of sense. I will do that!"

So I went back out there with my new strategy and I paid very close attention to where my opponents made contact with the ball when they attacked. If they made contact with the ball at or below the level of the net then I attacked right back at them.

And guess what?
